No Label, No Problem: Megan Thee Stallion Is Funding Her Own Music After Suing Her Former Label

Megan Thee Stallion, the Grammy-winning rapper behind hits like “Savage” and “WAP”, has announced that she is no longer signed to any label and is self-funding her own music. The Houston native made the revelation on Instagram Live on Thursday, amid her ongoing legal battle with her former label, 1501 Certified Entertainment.

“I have no label right now,” she said. “We’re doing everything funded straight out of Megan Thee Stallion’s pockets. The budget is coming from me. Motherfucking Hot Girl Productions! The next shit y’all about to see is all straight from Megan Thee Stallion’s brain, Megan Thee Stallion’s wallet.”

Megan said she is still looking for a new label, but that she is “excited” to be dropping music on her own. She released her latest album, Traumazine, on Aug. 12, along with a mixtape, Something for Thee Hotties, which she claims both count as an “album” under her contract with 1501. She is suing the label for at least $1 million in damages, alleging that they breached their agreement and tried to block her from releasing new music.

Megan’s dispute with 1501 dates back to March 2020, when she first spoke out about her “unconscionable” contract that gave the label 60 percent of her recording income and 30 percent of her touring and merchandising profits. She said she signed the deal when she was 20 years old and did not understand the terms until she hired Roc Nation as her management firm in September 2019.

“When I got with Roc Nation, I got management – real management – and real lawyers,” Megan said in a video posted on Twitter. “They were like, ‘Do you know that this is in your contract?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, damn, that’s crazy. No, I didn’t know.’”
