Sufjan Stevens: Singer-Songwriter Battles Rare Disorder, Releases New Album

Sufjan Stevens is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has released several acclaimed albums in various genres and styles. He is also known for his collaborations with other artists and composers, such as Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, and Justin Peck.

However, Stevens has been facing a serious health challenge since last year. He has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that causes the body’s immune system to attack the nerves. This can lead to muscle weakness, paralysis, and sometimes death.

Stevens revealed his condition on his website and social media, saying that he has been “in and out of the hospital for months” and that he is “learning to walk again”. He also shared photos and videos of himself doing physical therapy exercises, playing guitar, and walking with a cane. He expressed his gratitude for the support and prayers he has received from his fans and friends.

Despite his illness, Stevens has not stopped making music. He is set to release his new album Javelin on October 6, 2021. The album is described as “a collection of intimate songs about love, loss, faith, and hope” that are influenced by his personal experiences and struggles. The album features two singles: “Will Anybody Ever Love Me?”, a heartbreaking ballad about loneliness and longing, and “Javelin”, a hopeful anthem about overcoming adversity.

Stevens announced on his social media that he will be discharged from the hospital soon. He wrote: “Looks like I’m getting out of here tomorrow. I’ll continue the work at home and in outpatient therapy. Thanks for following my hospital blog. And thanks for all your prayers and well wishes. Pray for the peace of the world. Be well. Be safe. Be yourself. XOS”.

Sufjan Stevens is an inspiring example of resilience and creativity in the face of adversity. We wish him a speedy recovery and we look forward to hearing his new album.
