Budden Criticizes Drake’s Appeal to Younger Audience, Drake Responds
Drake has responded to Joe Budden’s critique of his album ‘For All the Dogs’ and his tendency to target younger audiences with his music.
On a recent Saturday, Drake had an extensive rebuttal for Budden, who had accused him of neglecting his older audience in favor of the younger generation. The renowned artist from Toronto fired back at Budden, labeling him as a “failure” and a “dropout.”
“You’ve failed in music,” Drake commented under a post from DJ Akademiks that included a video of Budden discussing Drake. “You abandoned it to do what you’re doing in this clip because this is what actually pays your bills. Any artist watching this should remember that they are watching a failure share their opinion on his concept of a success formula…a dropout share their opinion on how to achieve longevity…”
He added, “You changed careers because the ideas that came to your mind left you broke, living paycheck to paycheck, and the lyrics you wrote had 450 men attending your shows in worn-out Enyce jeans to grimace at Mood Muzik 29 and pretend you are the greatest.” Drake then offered advice to artists who are pursuing their passion regardless of public opinion. According to the 36-year-old, Budden is the epitome of frustration.
“Please, any artist that’s doing what they feel is right, don’t let these opinions affect your mindset afterward…this guy is the epitome of frustration and surrender,” he wrote. “You retired, and we never retired your jersey; we don’t even remember your number. We know you for doing this…you withdrew from rap not because you accomplished all you needed to; it’s because it wasn’t working for you.”
He continued, “I never want anyone in future generations to believe that the whole ‘everyone is entitled to their opinion’ is a real thing…this is a man projecting his own self-loathing and the fact I did and continue to do everything he wanted to do for himself. If you need it put in simpler terms, I own a 767…he owns a modest house in the 973 and flies first class on special occasions.”
Budden noticed Drake’s comments and replied: “You’ll mature sooner or later… Time is undefeated.”
Ebro Darden also contributed with a tweet explaining how Budden didn’t fail at music and how Drake found a system that worked for him.
“Joe Budden didn’t fail at music. He can still make music,” Ebro tweeted. “It seems Joe Budden chose not to play the ‘music business game’ and continually chase charts and do anything to stay relevant in music. Drake is choosing to keep playing to the same recipe that has given him success.” Joe Budden had much to say about Drake’s new album For All The Dogs. In the latest episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, the former rapper criticized Drake for making music for “the children” and completely ignoring his older fan base.
“[Drake is] rapping for the children,” Budden said around the 1:09:47 mark. “I had to look up how old this guy was when I finished listening to the album … You’re going to be 37 years old. Stay away from some of these younger guys, and stop dating these 25-year-olds. … Why are you still dating the 25-year-olds? You’re a 37-year-old billionaire.” He continued by comparing Drake’s career path to J. Cole’s, “Cole used to rap about kid stuff … And then he started to mature. And then the rapping sounded like an adult rapping. I want to hear adult Drake rapping for adult people. That’s my issue with him today.”
Budden also mentioned several of Drake’s younger friends such as Lil Yachty and Kai Cenat.
