New Blue Sun: André 3000’s Flute Album Beats Rap Heavyweights in Sales
Legendary producer Buckwild gave André 3000 some props for his new album New Blue Sun, which sold more than 24,000 copies in its first week. The Bronx native posted on Instagram on Monday (November 27) and praised 3 Stacks for his solo debut, which surpassed the sales of recent projects from other rap icons like Nas and Lil Wayne. “Rappers Andre 3000 out sold w/his flute album (24k),” he wrote, along with a list of 12 artists who sold less than the OutKast rapper/flautist.
The list included Nas’ Magic 2 (17,000) and Lil Wayne’s Tha Fix Before Tha VI (19,000), as well as Kodak Black‘s Pistolz & Pearlz (23,000), French Montana‘s Coke Boys 6 (21,000) and Ice Spice‘s Like…? (15,000), among others. “Only Andre 3000 can outsell mainstream rappers with an ambient flute album,” Buckwild added. HITS Daily Double reported that New Blue Sun debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 this week with 24,244 album equivalent units. However, these numbers have not been confirmed by Billboard yet, as the chart has not been fully updated. The project received mixed reactions from fans, but it also got positive feedback from Questlove, who called it “medicine” for the soul, and Pete Rock, who said it was “amazing.”
